Have Republicans Lost Touch With the American People?

Envy vs. Fairness

Mitt Romney's recent envy statements were addressed by the mainstream news as seen in this YouTube video. The real question is whether Mr. Romney truly believes Americans are so small minded they can be driven by jealousy and class warfare.

A month ago Rick Perry challenged Mitt Romney's moderate healthcare position saying Romney favored government mandated purchase and ownership of healthcare policies. With a knee-jerk reaction, Romney quickly challenged Perry with a $10,000 bet that his statement was not true. The YouTube video is below.

Impassioned & Intense: 'Tis the Season for American Political Debates. Just like leap year, we've weathered another four year election span. Here we are again gaping at the news curious as to which politician will be suffering with "foot-in-mouth" disease by election time. Which politician will slip up and make a fatal assertion that enrages and moves the masses to vengeful voting?

Mainstream news manages to keep interested Americans on the edge of their seats year round, but during election season it's especially emotional. Getting upset is one thing, getting angry is another, but sometimes certain statements can make 'yer blood boil.

The class warfare issue according to Romney's views and statements, is nothing more than emotion generated against the successful by the less fortunate, and it's all been created by the opposing political party and orchestrated by President Barack Obama. Additionally, Mr. Romney believes these discussions regarding billionaires and millionaires and the way they pay their taxes should occur in quiet, secretive [?] rooms. Is this another potential policy change we might anticipate with a Romney presidency? Many Americans believe sunlight is an element needed to keep government open and honest.

Two generations of Romneys have enjoyed family dynasty success in American business and politics. Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney was born to a wealthy, politically active Republican family. His father George W. Romney was a strong supporter of the American Civil Rights Movement and ran against Nixon and lost in the 1968 Republican Primary. George at one time was Governor of Michigan and served under President Richard M. Nixon as the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. Strong supporters and members of the Mormon Church, George and Mitt were missionaries and their family is honored by the Church and Brigham Young University.

Bain Capital, the company Mitt founded with three other partners, owns hundreds of companies including AMC Entertainment, Burger King, Clear Channel, Dominoes Pizza, The Weather Channel, Staples, HCA (Hospital Corporation of America), Sealy, Toys "R" Us, Dunkin' Donuts, DoubleClick and many more.

Mitt Romney's wealth has been estimated at around $200 million, of which his tax rate is suspected as being around 15%–– well below the rates of many taxed Americans who struggle to make ends meet each month. Of the Romney's personal properties, latest plans are to bulldoze the $12 million California home, and replace it with a larger, two story home to accommodate their 5 married sons and 16 grandchildren.

Why mention back room secret discussions? What's the big secret? With the $10,000 bet, my personal thoughts were aroused regarding the thousands of Americans, particularly elderly, who struggle to pay outrageous but necessary prescription expenses. Visions of homeless families living in tent cities who'd lost jobs and foreclosed homes came to mind. I had to wonder whether Mitt Romney had ever spent even one working day beside any member of America's middle class or among the working poor. Outside of his church experience, does he know what it's like to be born to poverty with little way out of the trap? Many good, American people struggle to work and live honest lives and can only dream of affording college for a single child––much less toss $10K around on a bet.

To make comparisons, I searched to find out more about Mitt Romney, presidential and congressional salaries, and to find exactly how many members of Congress are millionaires. Should Americans be jealous of successful people, or of the elected public servants who live so comfortably on the public payroll? Jealous? Maybe not, but how much sacrifice should be required of Americans to provide the very best for their "high class" political leaders? And if corporations and millionaires are allowed to participate so heavily in legislation and the election and candidate selection processes then shouldn't they also pay their fair share in taxes?

There's a weasel somewhere.
There's a weasel somewhere.

Somehow it doesn't seem right that the working American taxpayer is always left "holding the bag"–– required to fund services, salaries, healthcare, government, law enforcement, schools, war, and litigation with little voice in the matter while millionaires and corporations send their lobbyists to influence legislative decisions. All the while these folks get the tax breaks as bonuses added to their success stories. This isn't about jealousy. There's a weasel in this whole process somewhere, and everyone who isn't "in the money" can smell it.

George W. Bush called for tort reform mentioning more than once the words "gravy train" with regards to lawsuits initiated to protect the public from fraud, malpractice and corporate failures and compensate the victims of it. Did George Bush believe the American People were jealous of those wealthy ones who were controlling all the gravy? Is the business of making life easier for the wealthy and more difficult for the poor and victimized a Republican trait?

There's no doubt Romney and most of Congress could probably afford the same country clubs and social affairs. Sifting through the google search results, a news article from 2010 yielded the enlightening answers to salary questions and more. The base salary for the 535 members of Congress is $174,000, and nearly half of them (261) are millionaires. With the fantastic salaries, there are plenty of perks including retirement, healthcare and travel benefits and lobbyist provided entertainment. The president's salary is $400,000 per year, and the benefits surely exceed the salary. And according to Jack Abramoff, these people are exempt from the laws of insider trading. Could it be true?

Of course these people earn and deserve these salaries, but has our country become a nation of king-making elitists, whose system is designed to increasingly funnel riches, power and success to a growing minority of dynasties and wealthy folks at the very top? That's what it feels like.

The most recent news about Mitt Romney is that he plans to withhold his tax information until later this spring. His grip on the presidential nomination appears to be a stronghold and he's resisting the release of these "truths." The weeks ahead will tell the complete story. There's no doubt that Mitt Romney is a good person with a beautiful family. And with all of his achievements, he's an admirable, hard working person. He was blessed from the beginning having been born to a fortunate family. His beautiful wife has an uphill battle ahead with her health issues and there's no question the generous American People who have sacrificed children to war, assisted troubled countries, funded government, and bailed out corporations throughout the years will be wishing for the Romneys and their family the very, very best.

I believe all the political leaders of this country have lost touch with the American people. Sure there may be a handful with good intentions but putting their money where their mouth is seems to be more of a chore than just saying what they think the people want to hear to get themselves elected.

Hi, Michabelle, sorry to be late to the party, but to comment on this great article, I must say that I have no problem with the wealthy as long as that wealth is not acquired or maintained at my expense.

Mitt is basically a plutocrat who does not have a clue as to what is going on amonst 'the rabble' that he professes to wish to lead to the promised land. He is much more affilliated with Wall Street and Easy Street than mainstreet. Does the fact that he is a successful business man make him qualified to be president? I have written several articles about some of these things. The wealthy that have attained the office has usually had a certain empathy for the people they are serving, but I do not feel as confident about that today.

For the rich man, the entire world is a brothel...

You're too kind, Kenneth. You have some mighty fine work out here yourself. BTW I was talking with a Bammy friend today, reminding me of the whole tale about the "Free State of Winston." I told her I'd have to go back and read that story again and refresh my memory. Thanks for your comments, and have a great tomorrow.

Hi Cred thanks for the visit. I suspect many of these "public servants" have been removed from the general population for so long they have no idea what it's like to be a "plain, old everyday American." Ours seems to have become a country where the wealthy craft and implement laws for benefiting the wealthy. All the while, working people sacrifice daily to fund security for the banks and pay the salaries of the wealthy who write the laws!

Even in counties and townships the same people seem to stay in control, regardless of political party. Term limits would have helped, but how can you expect a Congressman or state legislator to legislate himself out of a career? We have too many career politicians and political families dominating politics and government.

With Democrats and Republicans there are plenty of millionaires, and there are good and bad on all fences. We should find ways to reinforce hope for the Middle Class and working people and help younger generations to believe that the American Dream is still alive - for them, and not for just a chosen few.

If Congress , Republicans and Democrats, have lost touch with the American people it is because they are not subject to the same rules and regulations that we are. Take insider trading for example. We do it, it's jail. Nancy Pelosi does it, well, it's okay. They write hideous health care legislation that they will never be subject to. They discuss Social Security but don''t participate and once elected they pretty much consider their tenure to be lifetime. As for the subject of wealth, well I don't mind Romney's millions. He earned them because he is smart. As for the taxes he pays, everyone who has investment income pays what he pays. It's the law. We have that in the tax code in order to encourage investment in our economy. Ordinary income is taxed mush higher and trust me, Romney pays that too. He also donates millions to charity. Using him as a scapegoat and trying to fuel the fires of class warfare is a very dangerous game. The Democrats would be wise to stop all the false accusations. It shows how little respect they have for the intelligence of the American people.

Thank you for your comment, breakfastpop. I do agree with much you've said but I don't believe the Democrats are trying to create a class war. This has been going on for many years. Since I can remember Republicans have been tagged as favoring the very wealthy. And I do agree with you that both parties have lost touch with the "real" Americans. There are many wealthy Democrats playing by the same tax/investment rules as Romney.

I don't believe wealthy people are exclusively responsible for creating all of the new jobs although they have marked advantages over the rest of us. And I don't believe the system is fair. It's designed by wealthy people, and for the wealthy people by lobbyists and legislators controlled by wealth. Nearly 1/2 the members of Congress are millionaires. The rest get a hefty salary and benefits most Americans could never dream of having. They're not in the same class, and it's just the plain, honest truth.

Considering healthcare, I can't imagine a successful country that cares for the poor with complete healthcare coverage, allows the rich equal and greater medical coverage and denies it to those in the middle who work very hard to live honestly and still can't afford it. It's just another way to starve out the Middle Class.

Beyond being unfair and wrong, it's foolish for a country to penalize honest, people who work hard and live honest. These folks have always been the building blocks of America and they're the ones who've always been asked to sacrifice.

Strip Mitt and his wife of their wealth, wealthy friends and connections, clothing, hair and spa appointments, and set them down in a small town in middle America with a welfare check and some food stamps and let's see who they are envious of. Probably someone with a job that pays the rent, a more comfy bed, access to healthcare, and a future that doesn't look quite so bleak. Thanks for your story.

Hello J Burgraff, you're right. Mitt would probably wish he'd been born a little luckier if he found himself trapped in poverty that exists in America. Thanks for your visit.

What an incredibly talented artist you are! That gift, more than anyone's money, definitely makes me envious!

Great article! Sometimes I wonder how anyone so removed from real people (and they all are) relate to any of us?

I live near La Jolla (about 20 miles away), where one of Mitt's homes is, and I am sure I have never seen him at Target, WalMart or KMart, that's for sure! Oh! And that 20 miles might as well be as far away as the farthest planet!

Jillian, is that the house he's planning to bulldoze and replace with a larger, nicer home? I think Mitt's probably a very nice person with sincerely good intentions. The thing that bothers me is that his wife is ill, and already tiring with the campaign's demands. I think he's the best choice of the candidates presented by Republicans, but worry about a potential 8 years with a First Lady who may be wrestling with her health.

It seems cruel to say, but is it really? I felt the same about Elizabeth Edwards. How could these ambitious men place this kind of burden on the women they love when they're ill? I guess it isn't just Republican men who seem to have faint consideration for their wives, but maybe all ambitious men are this way.

Thank you for the compliment. Some of my cartoons I am apprehensive about publishing. I usually create them when I'm a little "ruffled." :-O

I LOVE your hubs, and the spit n' vinegar spunk & emotion that bursts through them complimenting your avatar. Thank you for joining my circle. I'm honored to be a part of yours.

Yes, it is the house he plans to rebuild. La Jolla and the rest of the coast in San Diego County have a mix of home types, from the huge 10,000 square foot mansion to the tiny beach cottages and they are all beautiful!

And, yes, Mrs. Romney has MS and does appear to be tired lately. She, like Elizabeth Edwards, probably has so much love for her spouse that she is willing to sacrifice her health for her husband's ambitions. I sure wouldn't, but then I am not the type to be a good politician's wife- too big a mouth, first of all...

And please keep putting your art work in your articles- it is awesome!

What is it they say? A picture is worth a thousand words...
